# Obsidian Markdown Showcase: Text Formatting
This post demonstrates the various text formatting options available in Obsidian to test how they render in HTML.
## Basic Text Formatting
Here's a paragraph with **bold text**, *italic text*, and ***bold italic text*** combined. You can also use __underscores for bold__ and _underscores for italic_.
This text has ==highlighted sections== which are great for drawing attention to important information.
Sometimes you need to ~~strike through~~ text that's no longer relevant.
You can also use `inline code` for technical terms or commands like `npm install` or `git commit`.
## Blockquotes
> This is a simple blockquote. It's useful for citing sources or emphasizing important statements.
> [!NOTE]
> This is a callout box! Obsidian supports various callout types that help organize information visually.
> [!TIP]
> Here's a helpful tip: You can nest content inside callouts and they support full markdown formatting including **bold**, *italic*, and even `code`.
> [!WARNING]
> Be careful when testing rendering - some features may not translate perfectly to HTML.
> [!DANGER]
> This is a danger callout for critical warnings.
> [!INFO]
> Informational callouts are great for side notes and additional context.
> [!QUESTION]
> Did you know callouts can be collapsible?
> [!EXAMPLE]- Click to expand this example
> This callout starts collapsed! The `-` after the type makes it collapsible and closed by default.
> [!SUCCESS]+ Expanded by default
> Using `+` makes the callout collapsible but expanded by default.
## Nested Blockquotes
> First level of quoting
>> Second level - nested quotes
>>> Third level - even deeper
>>>> And we can go deeper still!
## Footnotes
Here's a sentence with a footnote[^1] and another one[^longnote].
[^1]: This is the first footnote - short and sweet.
[^longnote]: This is a longer footnote with multiple paragraphs.
You can include multiple paragraphs by indenting them.
And even include code:
```javascript
console.log("Hello from a footnote!");
```
## Horizontal Rules
You can create horizontal rules in multiple ways:
---
***
___
## Escaping Characters
Sometimes you need to display literal characters: \*asterisks\*, \#hashtags\#, \[brackets\], and \`backticks\`.
## Superscript and Subscript
While not native to Obsidian, some themes support H~2~O for subscript and X^2^ for superscript.
## Comments
This text is visible. %% But this comment is hidden in the source and shouldn't render %%
The comment above should not appear in the rendered output.
## Block Identifiers
This paragraph has a block identifier for referencing. ^important-block
You can link to specific blocks using `[[#^important-block]]`.
